There comes a time when Sydney siders feel the urge to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Everyone’s idea of the perfect getaway is different.  Some prefer long, scenic drives along the coast, while others may favour a more cosmopolitan break. Whether you‘re partial to a romantic, luxury, country, beach, natural, adventurous or gourmet break, Xplore picks the cream of the crop within four hours drive of the city.

 

Port Stephens

An easy 2.5 hour drive from Sydney’s CBD, Port Stephens leaves you spoilt for choice with its 26 beaches, lively waterside food and drink scene, boutique shopping and range of activities. Jenolan Caves

For a remarkable natural experience head to famous Jenolan Caves, just 2.5 hours west of Sydney. The world’s most ancient discovered open cave system, it follows the course of the beautifully blue Jenolan River, and spans over forty kilometres with multi-level passages and over 300 entrances.

The incredible limestone formations are showcased in eleven caves open to the public. A tour guide leads you through the caves, explaining the history and horror stories that form its past. Along the way you’ll find numerous Silurian marine fossils, countless stalagmites and stalactites, as well as the stunning calcite formations.

Well worth the eventful drive, the Jenolan Caves are perfect for thrill seekers and nature lovers.

Jervis Bay

Renowned for its white sand beaches and exotic turquoise waters, Jervis Bay is one of the best places in Australia to unwind and take a break from it all. Located just under three hours from Sydney, the getaway destination has safe beaches, luscious lagoons, secret coves and hidden creeks absolutely ideal for swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, surfing and just about anything else possible on water.

The Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park for wilderness lovers and is native to kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, wombats and many rare species of wildlife. The main town surrounding it is Huskisson where you can sit back and take in the natural beauty whilst enjoying the lively cafe and bar culture.

Blue Mountains

Beautiful through every season of the year, the Blue Mountains is one of the most popular getaway destinations in the holiday season. A lovely drive or two hour train ride from Central to Katoomba, it is difficult not to fall in love with this mostly untouched part of New South Wales. Stand in awe of the classic view of the Three Sisters from Echo Point, or hike one of the many walking tracks and admire the unique plant and animal life.

There are also adventure activities such as abseiling, mountain biking and off road tours for the game. With stunning views in every direction, and world heritage sites to boot, immerse yourself in your own natural paradise.
