There was once a time when the idea of deep fried chicken skin and pulled tea may have been met with raised eyebrows and scrunched noses. Like all great things though, it didn’t take too long for curiosity to kill the cat, or in this case, put it in a food coma. Now with 19 restaurants in Australia and over 60 around the globe, PappaRich has become a hub for culturally alert foodies to indulge in authentic Malaysian nosh, sans the heavy dosh.

Alumni of Chinta Ria and Hard Rock Café, Franchisee Charmaine Sam runs a tight ship at the Broadway eatery and takes pride in greeting diners with gracious Malaysian hospitality. Officially launched in April 2014, the city eatery is more than just a cheap feed for povo students, the real allure lying in its use of fresh ingredients, rich flavours and humble theatrics.

But roti flipping and tea pulling aside, the snaking queues outside are no doubt in not so patient anticipation of PappaRich’s notable flaky roti canai served with spicy curry chicken, delicious Hainan chicken rice and bottomless bowls of scorching laksa. The mammoth drinks list (61 to be exact), has also met with great favour amongst regulars and adventurers alike, popular picks including everything from the traditional Teh Tarik and Soya Milk Jelly, to the Open Sesame and Matcha Rocks. If you want to avoid painful regret though, don’t look past the enticing Milo Dinosaur, a monster mug of chilled milo and ice cream, topped with another heap of the good stuff.

Frequented by a steady stream of students, shoppers, Central Park residents and corporates at all times of the week, what makes PappaRich unique is the offer of genuine and reasonably priced Malaysian treats in an enjoyable ambience.
