Foundry 616 Jazz Club

by Meghna Bali

While Sydney may not have its roots entrenched in a deep jazz history seen by the musical meccas of New Orleans and Montreux, or scores of clubs dedicated to swinging the blues, the city does have a reputation for inspiring musical talent to cut from the crowd and belt a different tune. Foundry 616 offers aficionados the best in contemporary jazz with influences from Latin, African, soul, funk and RnB music, providing a coveted platform for local and international bands.

Walk through the doors of this CBD establishment, and guests are transported into the smooth, intimate jazz dens of America and Europe, complete with impeccable acoustics, crimson walls, dark timber fixtures and a liquor list to boot. The man behind the music is Peter Rechniewski, formerly the artistic director of Sydney Improvised Music Association (SIMA) and a passionate lover of improvised live music, committed to keeping Sydney’s jazz pulse beating for over 30 years.

But the joint isn’t all booze and sax. Foundry 616 also provides guests with reasonably priced dining options including a variety of pizzas, tapas, mains and desserts. Popular eats include Head Chef Navin Karir’s signature chicken korma and panzanella salad served with black vinegar dressing and bocconcini. The venue also opens for lunch on Thursdays and Fridays between 12pm and 3pm, when people can drop in for a specialized lunch menu and slick tunes.

Jazz truly without frontiers, the lounge boasts an incredible line up of eclectic artists this August including Brazillian singer Anna Saleh, Sorcha Alburquerque Trio, Greg Lloyd Group, plus many other talented national and international stars to come in September and October, and into the summer. Foundry 616 will also host Jazz Hip Hop Freestyle Sessions, every Friday night from 11.30pm till 2.00am for a night of improvised genius.

A bonafide jazz cave in the heart of Sydney, Foundry 616 is the best place to grab a drink (or three) and some delicious grub while listening to quality live acts.
