D C ENO Hair Studio

by Meghna Bali

Gone are the days lads could stroll into their corner barbershop, get an $8 buzz cut and call it a day. Off late we’ve noticed clients both male and female becoming edgier and more experimental, driven by an inclination towards a style more bespoke. Inspired by everything from Ricki Hall’s hipster undercut to Beckham’s trendy everything, cuts are making major statements, and finding the perfect barber is now just as critical as the crop.

Queue D C Eno, conveniently located a stone’s throw from Green Square station, the retro hair garage is the kind of space you’d grow out your mop for. No stranger to the hair scene, owner Tash Stewart has been working and running hair studios since 1999, first in the Sunshine Coast and later the West End in London.

Inspired by Grandma Doreen Carmichael Eno and a steady inner Sydney clientele, she set up shop in a charmingly vintage shared space, a concept she picked up in The Smoke, that supports a more sustainable model for small business owners.  Amidst an eclectic mix of antiques and curios, Tash waves her golden shears and leaves clients feeling relaxed and confident, albeit a little inebriated courtesy a free lager. Did we mention she’s also a qualified counsellor, ace listener and totally unpretentious, all in an old school salon in industrial Alexandria – colour us impressed!

The space is complete with red and blue lockers housing Evo hair products, cinder block footrests, classic number plates and varied knick knacks, staying true to its repair shop aesthetic. Not your average beauty house, clients may walk in on a 50s dress up day or find themselves listening to a live band on a Sunday afternoon as they tame their manes and let the good vibes roll in.
