Bloody Mary’s

by Wendy Hoang

This review begins with a confession: the writer of this piece is actually not a big drinker. In fact, she’s only ever had one Bloody Mary before this and did not enjoy it so much…

But then she tasted the spectacularly refreshing Bloody Marys at newly minted, Hamptons-inspired bar and eatery, wait for it, Bloody Mary’s in Darlinghurst (FYI the King’s Cross side). Just to be clear, two of us went out and both returned converts, which really does say something.

The venue is the brain-child of Bloody Mary super fan, mother and now restaurateur, Cinta Rockey. She and her husband, Jeremy, have turned this enviable space on Victoria Street into a highly-instagrammable destination for chilling, drinking the finest in tomato juice based potions and delicious eats. It’s fully equipped with standing heaters, American flag cushions, and astroturf covered ottomans for total holiday effect. The venue also has larger tables in the rear courtyard, ideal for big groups on weekends – so, bring your squad.

Bloody Mary’s make their own tomato juice daily from quality produce, so none of that watered-down-can stuff goes into their namesake cocktails. “That’s the secret”, reveals Jeremy. He explains how his wife was inspired stateside, where she would see Americans order the revered cocktail at all hours of the day. There are no less than eight Bloody Mary concoctions on the menu and the most picturesque is one you’ve probably seen plastered all over your Instagram, the infamous Bloody Hell, complete with a prawn, chicken wing, celery stick and a mini burger slider as garnish. Yes way.

The rest of the American-inspired food menu has just as much pizazz, featuring items like The Heart Attack platter and SPAM burger. We also like the bagels and the meaty Ultimate Hangover Cure plate for brekkie. We could go on, but that would mean more reading and less eating, so go forth and feed your instagram feed.
